Peter Thomas Roth: Second Obsession Worthy Product

I have been through approximately 2.5 years of trying to figure out what the H*&L is wrong with my skin...clearly this hasn't been a frustrating journey.  My skin totally changed as I got into my late 20's, and I started breaking out like crazy on my cheeks (my CHEEKS!).  As I started to treat my skin like a full blown case of acne (it wasn't), I now understand that I only irritated my skin further, thus causing more breakouts, and on and on it went.  Vicious cycle, indeed.  I had a chemical peel, which basically felt like my face was being pressed against the sun.  Not that such a procedure isn't a good idea - for me, I'm not so sure it was the right route at that time.  Anyway.  The one positive is that I've learned a lot along the way, and I have finally figured out that yes, I do have a "congested" complexion that requires some level of treatment - and I've finally figured out that perfect level of treatment with the aid of PTR's gentle (key word) complexion correction pads.

Holy moly, these pads are miracle workers.  They only have .5% salicylic acid, in comparison to the more heavy duty 2% in a lot of acne-fighting products.  Super easy on the skin, they deliver just the amount of treatment my skin needs to remain clear.  And because they're so gentle, you can use them once or twice daily.  I noticed improvement immediately, and my skin has really remained clear since I started using these.  An added bonus?  They smell peachy, and not like medicine.    I wash my face, swipe one of these over my skin, use my new fave serum (in an upcoming post, I know you're excited), and I'm good to go.

Sunsilk Hydra TL Oui

Boy oh boy, Teddy Charles.  Vous ĂȘtes un homme magique.  That means "you are one magic man" en français, at least according to Google Translate (Teddy is Paris-born...I'm not just throwing out random french phrases).  If you read my previous post about Sunsilk's Battle of the Brushes, you know that Sunsilk has teamed up with Teddy Charles (one of the fashion industry's most notable hairstylists) to re-formulate and re-introduce four categories of hair care products.  There are products for the curly-haired ladies (Sunsilk Captivating Curls), those in need of more volume in their life (Sunsilk Daring Volume), pretty gals with dry locks (Sunsilk Hydra TLC), and excessive users of heat (Sunsilk ThermaShine).

As for me, I fall into the "dry locks" category, thanks to years and years...and years...of coloring and heat styling.  Sunsilk so graciously sent me their new product line to try the goods for myself before the Battle of the Brushes event this coming Friday - and I'm so glad they did.  If I'm being honest, I don't know if I would have purchased any of these products prior to being able to sample them.  The verdict?  I can't gush enough over how much I adore this line.  I am pleasantly surprised over just how much I love this line.  I haven't tried the others (yet), mostly because the Hydra TLC gives me such amazing hair and I'm kind of stuck on that right now.  :)  The results:  shiny, smooth, healthy, sleek, (fill in any positive hair adjective here) - it literally feels like I just left my salon.  I am officially converted - and at about $5 a pop, my wallet is quite happy about that switch.

Don't forget...if you live in Indy - come and hang out on Friday at Castleton Square to see the Battle of the Brushes.  Be one of the first 50 to snag a free product...highly recommended by yours truly.

Hello, Giveaway.

I am in a super fantastic terrific mood.  As a result, I have decided to gift one special reader with a sweet little new bath and body collection from Victoria's Secret.  The new Pink line is fab -not only does it leave my skin super soft, the scents are great as well.  My personal fave out of the 3 scents available is the vanilla & shea butter (citrus & mint and cucumber & waterlily are also available).  It's so warm and soothing - and I know, I know it's getting warmer outside, but who doesn't love some good vanilla scents?  I can't even explain how much I love the sugar scrub - it has the perfect grain to it and gets a little sudsy.

Here's what you get:  Pink Feel Soft Go Natural sugar scrub, body wash, and body mist in Vanilla & Shea Butter ($36 value).

Become a fan of Pretty Indy on Facebook and tell us your favorite, can't live without it beauty product and why - we'll pick a winner on Monday.  If you're not on Facebook, leave us a comment here!
Good luck!

Spring Cleaning.

Spring is absolutely glorious and inspiring, is it not?  And while we are all doing some serious spring cleaning in our homes, I have a hunch that our faces and bodies need a little TLC for the transition from winter too.  For this post, I'm concentrating on the lips.  I applied a lovely creamy bright pink the other day and was horrified to see how roughly it was settling in to my lips - it was not a nice, uniform pink...it was pink, rough skin, pink, rough skin, and on and on.  In other words, EW.

In search of a gentle little lip scrub to rid my little pout of rough skin, I found one by Korres.  It has a light, fresh, lemon-y scent that is super refreshing...while the scrub is nourishing and gently exfoliating at the same time.  I'm pretty sure my lips have never been softer.  I usually do a little scrub in the morning and follow up with my Korres lip butter (read my review here), and then repeat at night.  My lipsticks are going on so much smoother, and my lips no longer look horrifying, thank you very much.

The Korres kit pictured is a great way to try the scrub, as well as some other lip products - the scrub is $19 on its own, and this kit is $34.50.  You do the math.  :)  Get it here.  Don't want the kit?  Get the scrub here

3 Words: Peter. Thomas. Roth.

I am utterly and completely having a love affair with Peter Thomas Roth products at present.  So far, everything I've tried has been so effective - with fast results, too.  I plan on telling you all about 3 more products I'm loving right now, but let's start with this fab mascara.  First of all, product fanatics, how can you casually walk by a mascara called "Lashes To Die For?"  Yeah, who wants lashes to die for anyway?  Uh huh, that's what I thought.  Moving on.

So I actually had no idea PTR made a mascara - I knew about his day and night treatments that promise to bless you with longer fringe (haven't tried them), but was not privy to this product.  I was going to buy Clinique's new lengthening mascara and my Sephora gal suggested this one instead.  I'm glad she did.

The product low-down:  Formulated without parabens, sulfates, etc etc, this mascara promises to be your one-way ticket to clump-free, soft, defined, lengthened, non-smudging, flakeless, swoon-worthy lashes.  I'll bat my eyes to that.  Obviously, this product delivers and does what it says it will do, or I wouldn't be writing this glowing review (wouldn't that be quite the curve ball).  My eye lashes love this formula, and not only feel soft and conditioned, but appear longer and more voluminous.  It also seems to get better and better with continued usage - no promise for that from the product that I know of, just personal opinion.

Get it here for $22.

Luscious Hair

As if I could possibly love Living Proof any more (I previously reviewed the Straight-making formula here, and the smoothing shampoo/conditioner here) they release this new Full Thickening Cream.  Oddly, I wanted to try this product - even though I have pretty thick hair (okay, okay, frizzy, confused, wavy, etc.) to begin with.  Maybe it was my fantasty slow-mo image of me frolicking in a field of daisies with long, luscious, billowing hair that attracted me to try it...who knows.  Regardless, I tried it.  And loved it.  And continue to love it.  This product did not make my hair go into freakishly huge mode as other volumizing products have done in the past (thank you, Mom, for buying me the wrong formula in high school - another story for another time).  In fact, it really did just make it luscious and full....and super soft to boot!  I also found that it helped define my layers nicely (my hair probably hits about 3 inches below my collar bone and has long layers).  I may have pretended to be in a music video while blow drying my newly full, yet smooth locks - but I guess that's just for me to know.  :)

Make everyone jealous of your beautifully full head of hair by grabbing this product at Sephora - or click here.  $24.00.

Budget Beauty

I love this slideshow/article on Total Beauty featuring their 10 best budget beauty tips.  There are so many fun ideas here - and I learned a lot!  For instance, I had no idea that strawberries contain natural salicylic acid (used in tons of anti-acne products), or that honey by itself is useful for fighting breakouts and dry skin!  Find these tips and more here.

Enjoy, you beautiful frugalistas!!

Cuckoo for Coconut Craze

At a mere $10/pop for a generously sized bottle, the new Victoria's Secret Beauty Rush Hypergloss Shampoos and Conditioners are a fun buy.  I purchased the Coconut Craze, and the fabulous tropical scent has been just what I need as warmer weather gets closer.

The promises:  Shampoo will leave your hair ultra-fresh and ultra-glossy with a superfruit shine complex and Pro-Vitamin B-5.  Conditioner will leave your hair soft and glossy with extra conditioners and another dose of shine complex.

The results:  My hair really does look shiny and feel healthy, not to mention I get great wafts of light coconut scent (which I love) all throughout the day.  A little goes a long way with the shampoo, and the conditioner feels nice and thick which = moisturizing.

Other scents are Apple-tini and Juiced Berry.  Right now, they are 2 for $15.  Get them at Victoria's Secret or click here for the web-site.

Winter Makeup Do's

I got a daily tip from "Self" magazine today in my e-mail and was reminded of the fact that winter really does wreak havoc on our delicate facial skin.  The tip was this:

Rubbing foundation onto parched skin can result in a dry, cakey face. Instead, opt for a hydrating foundation or a tinted moisturizer. Pat on color with your fingertip to avoid exacerbating flakes and go light on powder, which can suck up moisture that your skin needs.

This is so true...I was talking to a friend last week about this very thing.  Her complaint was that her powder foundation is very apparent on her face, as though it's sort of just sitting on top of her skin.  My recommendation to her was this:  try a little exfoliation to smooth the surface and make sure her face is well moisturized.  In addition, this switch can make a huge difference: replacing powder with a tinted moisturizer, a la the Self tip.  I always use a primer, which also helps to smooth the surface of your skin, and lately I've been using Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer.  It's a fluffy textured, highly blendable formula that evens out skin tone and moisturizes in an instant.  This has been exactly what my skin has needed this winter.  It's a tad on the pricey side ($42), but a little does go a looooong way.

Check it out here.

Oooooooh....Pretty.

That was my reaction when I tried this primer by Tarina Tarantino for the first time. A brand new line at Sephora, Tarina Tarantino is the famed jewelry designer with a flair for girly fun (I mean, her hair is bright pink for crying out loud). This comes across very well in her packaging - the compacts have little crystals on them that are all placed by hand!
I found this primer to be very lightweight and super fast absorbing, all while still giving me a great glideable surface on which to apply my makeup. It is called "Pearl Glow" for a reason - the primer imparts a very soft, luminous glow that evens out your skin tone and makes it look flawless in the process. Glitter phobes be calmed - this is not a sparkly, pre-teen looking formula. Just a nice glow. It continues to look just as lovely under makeup...and lasts all day without getting dry or greasy. I'm completely sold.
Check it out here - get it for $32.

I Heart Korres

Dear Readers - meet Korres makeup sets. Korres makeup sets - meet dear readers. Now that we're all well acquainted and feel all comfy with each other, we can talk openly about how awesome these kits are.
I love Korres products anyway (see this previous post), but these kits put me over the moon, if you will. I particularly adore the Smokey Eyes Made Easy kit - "made easy" is an understatement. While I am no makeup artist, I think I know my way around makeup application enough to follow some directions - but somehow, with other kits, my makeup has never ended up looking the way it is supposed to. With this kit, the directions are super easy, and VOILA! You look just like the model (well, the makeup at least) when you're finished. The 4 eyecolors are gorgeous enough on their own, and the lip gloss is the most perfect color to compliment a smokey eye. I adore the eyeliner - it's easy to apply and smudgeable. The mascara is nourishing and buildable for beautimous lashes.
Oh, and the price? $39.50. Yeah, that's right. Get it here (and check out their other kits!).

Say Yes To This Oil

I've heard a lot lately about how great cleansing oils are at completely removing makeup and nourishing skin. While it may seem counter-intuitive, oil is actually quite ideal for removing makeup; see, like dissolves like (oil will dissolve the oil based makeup). For more info on this topic, click here for a post on The Beauty Brains.
Science aside, I decided to give this Makeup Breakup Cool Cleansing Oil a whirl (doesn't it just sound delightful?). Not only does it smell so refreshingly minty, it really does the trick on removing every last bit of dirt and makeup from my face - and leaves it nice and soft. It doesn't leave any residue, and certainly doesn't seem to make my skin any oilier. Oh, and it kinda makes me look forward to washing my face before bed...anything that does that HAS to be a miracle product.

Favorite Moisturizer O' The Moment

We are in the dead of winter, and my skin has never been more soft or smooth. To what do I owe this great pleasure? It would be The Moisture Magnet moisturizer by Mario Badescu. My Clarisonic brush certainly does its part in keeping my skin smooth and better able to absorb the goodies I slather on after cleansing, but I have noticed such a huge difference since using this moisturizer. First off, it is quite thick, but does not leave any greasiness whatsoever. My skin just drinks it in and appears comforted and dewy post-application. I have also noticed that my makeup is going on and blending much easier, which makes me a happy camper because better blending and smooth application = natural looking. I've been using quite a few other MB products that I'm totally digging - so be on the lookout for more posts on those. For now, check out this moisturizer. Your skin will thank you. Oh, and did I mention it's $22?? HE-LLO!?! Super affordable alert!!
PS - I have combination skin - tends to be a bit oilier in the summer, so I think this is definitely a winter moisturizer for me.

MVP

While I have an exorbitant amount of beauty products that I really do love, few get the MVP (most valuable product) award. For me, this highly coveted title goes to anything in Orgasm by NARS. This shade has been around for a long time, and has gotten tons of press because of its universally flattering peachy-pink shade (it looks a lot more shocking in the compact than on your skin, promise). Luckily, NARS gets it because they have released a new complexion illuminator in this lovely shade. Basically, you can mix it in with your moisturizer, foundation, or primer....or you can apply directly on top of your makeup. Either way, you are left with a perfectly refreshed, glowing complexion.
The other must haves in orgasm? Most definitely the blush, as well as the multiple. The multiple is a creamy stick that can be used anywhere on your face (hence, "multiple"), but I especially love it swiped in a little curve above my cheeks to my temples for a nice dewy glow.
Follow the links for more info on each product.

Winter Lip Care

Lips feeling a little ragged? Rough lips = never a good thing. Seriously, don't be that gal with the lipstick gathered spots of dry skin on your lips...SHUDDER. You need soft, healthy, kissable lips! The fastest way to happy lips is to slather on (yes, slather) some Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment. At $22.50 a pop, I realize it's a bit pricey for a lip treatment, but I guarantee it will be love at first swipe. It smells so good but more than that - it feels amazing. Your lips will have never been so happy. Get it here.

Not really wanting to shell out $22.50? Here are some other options:

1. Absolutely any of the Mentha lip line products by C.O. Bigelow at Bath and Body Works - for the men folk, the mentha chap stick is a must. There is also a lemon lip balm that reminds me of the Fresh version - and at $7.50, it's quite a deal. B&B Works often has great deals on their lip products, like buy 2 get 1 free, or right now, they are all $5.

2. Classic Carmex is just nostalgic, and who doesn't love that tingle?

3. Korres lip butters - see this previous post.

4. The Body Shop is known for amazing body butters - and has little lip butter versions that are amazing as well. $8/pop.

Winter Skin/Hair Savers Series

If you're anything like me, really cold weather hurts your skin and/or hair's feelings. It more than likely responds by being super dry, itchy, flaky, and so on. I'm here this week to provide you with some great armor to protect yourself from these little nuisances and give you the ability to go on being the super hot babe you know you are.

We shall begin with your lovely head of hair. The mask by L'oreal you see pictured is one of my faves - and it smells amazing to boot. An exhilarating rosemary-mint greets you when you open this jar of deeply moisturizing hair magic. Leave it on for 3 minutes (a great time to shave those legs) and VOILA! A soft, shiny head of hair is yours. Check it out here (it's also hugely affordable at $8.99). Here are some other products to check out:

1. Dove Intense Damage Therapy Conditioner $7.75 at drugstores

2. Fekkai Advanced Technician Color Care Mask $35 at salons, Sephora, Ulta

3. Aveeno Nourish + Condition Leave-in Treatment $6.99 at drugstores

4. Aveda Dry Remedy Moisturizing Treatment Masque $26 at Aveda and salons
